The thing is, I can personally attest to the fact that it doesn't, as my co-teacher and I teach our second graders every year about King and other civil rights leaders and the causes they fought for... And WHY. The why is important...why were those causes even necessary to fight for? Racism. We try to explain it in an objective way that doesn't preach or shame anyone in my 90% white classroom. I love this age group because they don't have solidified opinions yet as they do by fifth grade and beyond.
