The one unfortunate mistake that people on all sides make is the ad hominem attack. The Left, though they seem to do it less often, is just as guilty as the Right. This past decade may have gone differently for DEI and trans rights if activists didn't engage with troglodytes online or on college campuses and instead aimed their fervor at state houses. The argument for DEI is sound, but you never win hearts and minds by attacking other people's beliefs. You also don't need to change everyone's mind either, just enough of those in power who set policy. MLK knew this, but damn it's hard.
