Thank you for your thoughts. Yesterday for the first in my career I was struck repeatedly by a student. My admin didn't even blink. Instead, I was questioned about what I did leading up to the incident. It's maddening, demoralizing. Administrators are basically scared nowadays to confront parents about their out-of-control children. It's easier to let a kid tell their teacher to fuck off, then it is to suspend them, deal with the parents, etc. This is happening to me this year and to some of my colleagues in the past. We're thrown under the bus. The poor kids in my class... the ones we'd call "neurotypical." They're scared of this boy who throws chairs, swears, and now hits the teachers. But this is the coffin that public schools have built for themselves and now they have to lie in it. If you're interested in reading it, I wrote a piece for Medium about public schools and the crisis unfolding, plus what I think can be done about it.
