Teacher here. This is outrageous, but I can understand how it came to be. Facts vs. Skills has been a debate for years within schools. Skills, clearly, have won. You might think that's absurd when you look at those reading and math scores, but I guarantee you those schools were pushing a how to learn narrative and not a what to learn narrative, and this is what you get. More so called skills instruction and less practice. More skills on how to find information...fewer facts to learn, memorize, and take a test on. It's almost like we feel sorry for kids when they have to apply their brains. Like it's going to hurt them or cause trauma. I don't get it. But I totally understand the results of these surveys.
