It was called the middle class, and having a big, vibrant one was always good for the elites because it kept them at a safer distance from the angry working class mob. It also gave the mob a dream to buy into...the so called American dream. With that diminished, we're seeing the rise of populism, Trump...and now assassinations of the upper class.
