I read "more importantly" to mean that to the scientists conducting the experiment, this was of utmost importance to them. I would imagine it IS of considerable importance, that the results match the theory. To your point about about only particle researchers using the particle accelerator, perhaps string theorists can build a string accelerator? Not being glib here; I just don't know why you have a problem with particle physicists being the primary users of the particle accelerator?
