I once asked my parents in a survey who wanted homework and who didn't. I teach social needs children. I had a class of 10 kids and I expected all of the parents to say they didn't want homework. 9 out of 10 said they wanted it. So I kept sending it home, but I cut it back a little. I continued to get about a 30 percent return rate. Maybe I tapped into a psyche here among underprivileged parents that they don't want any special treatment... but not necessarily because they're going to work harder. I don't know. But now I just send home a little homework once in a while... and I tell the kids if they don't finish class work because of fooling around, I'm sending it home for homework. If they don't return it the next day and I don't hear a logical reason why from their family, I keep them in for part of recess to finish it. ((Which, again, is because it is classwork that needed to be done to keep up with the rest of the class).
