I have read Gatto, the king of the unschool movement. He was New York State teacher of the Year at one point. He's influenced me and my teaching style, but many teachers are unaware of his ideas, sadly. His points about how we're ruled by the clock and everything's disconnected and it stifles critical and creative thinking are very valid. Having worked inside the system for 18 years at the elementary level, there are lessons we can take from him but limitations as well. No one of course has all the answers, but what I'm struck by the whole unschooling concept is the inequity in it. But I think public schools could go a long way to address that inequity while radically transforming how we educate kids.
