I also think his brilliance was that he didn't set up an Us vs. Them duality that made one side the heroes and the other the enemy. That's currently what's going on in society and it only entrenches people further. He believed in widening the circle to include everyone, since we're all Americans, instead of encircling only our allies and keeping everyone else out. That's sorely missing today and it makes productive dialogue nearly impossible.
