Economics and an educated workforce really have nothing in common. A brief glance at our students' standardized test scores proves that. Now, what an educated populace can do is be wary of things like demagoguery, but of course we see that failing in the rise of authoritarianism and Trumpism. We don't actually need less public education; we need public education to start focusing on the things that matter, like a rich liberal arts curriculum. Your average Joe six-pack pays his taxes for public education. That doesn't mean he should get a direct say in any of it. Education should insulate itself from the passions of the moment, as well-educated people are able to do.
