Do you ever back down, way down, to a simple paragraph with students struggling with something like this? I mean, like a synopsis of sorts, do you ever ask the students to write their problem solution essay as a basic paragraph of five or six sentences and then turn that in so you can see if they've chosen a more concise thesis and found a few relevant supporting details that they can then expound on to write their essay?
