Consciousness emerging only from neurons firing has me baffled, however. Doctors have known for a long time now that near death experiences are real, that patients have recalled seeing and hearing things while seemingly "unconscious", and that they happen in people whose brains are in a dying or "dead" phase, as in, no measurable electrical activity. Can the brain create consciousness with no measurable electrical activity? That seems counterintuitive to say the least. When I'm simply asleep, my brain is still highly active, but I can't recall seeing or hearing anything happening in the room around me. But if consciousness is so simple that the brain basically requires next to no "power" as it were to make us see and remember (especially with our eyes closed and in a state of physical trauma!) then it wouldn't be a far reach at all to say that the common goldfish is probably enjoying a rich inner life. Thoughts?
